rants

Quba Trip 2 of 4

coming back from Long Forest after getting rained out.

This kid came out to watch the silly Americans cross the creek. (54kb) Another curious kid. (49kb) All the older people we ran across would have these horible scowels on thier faces as we aproached. Then we would smile or wave or say salom in greating and they we light up like this woman. It was an amazing transformation from old troll to cute grandparent or something. (63kb)
He is posing for the photos. No smiles for photos for her. (49kb) This kid has a future as a model I think. (45kb) Look at that hollywood face. (42kb)
2561.jpg (66kb) Check out the smile on this kid. Also, notice the sportcoats. Lots of people dress in suits all the time here. (60kb) A real life sheppard and his dog watching thier flock. (78kb)
I thought this could have been Southern Iowa. Robyn on the other hand had a hard time suspending her disbelief. (64kb) 2575.jpg (66kb) 2578.jpg (58kb)
The orchards in Quba are quite different from the ones we're used to seeing in the states. (55kb) Quba has, and had had for 100s of years, a large Jewish population. Strange in a country that boasts a 98% muslim population. (42kb) 2583.jpg (40kb)
2584.jpg (44kb) This graveyard was littered with Jewish symbols - reflecting the diversity of the town's population. (78kb) 2589.jpg (66kb)
The caretaker came out and showed us the Quite a view for a graveyard. We've found many of the graveyards in Azerbaijan have amazing views. (65kb) Notice the hewbrew. (66kb)
2606.jpg (80kb) Not a bad view to have for eternity (72kb) This guy was lifesized. (65kb)
2629.jpg (50kb) 2633.jpg (63kb) 2636.jpg (74kb)
This is one of the three synagogues we saw in Quba. The Rabbi was excited to show this one off since it was remodled only 10 years ago. (67kb) 2641.jpg (46kb) 2645.jpg (44kb)
This tapestry was a gift from a sister synagogue in the states. (70kb) Anders kept trying to climb the podium (74kb) Rugs drying outside the synagogue (55kb)
2661.jpg (81kb) The kids baged on this metal door until a couple of old women came to see what all the racket was. (71kb) The Rabbi. (64kb)
Elias explains the kids are. (71kb) This woman insisted that we try the plums. They were great. (66kb)
